Part One: The Origin: "Fakes and Myths"

Introduction:
In my 25 years as a historical researcher, this has to be the biggest, poorly created and supported hijacking of history I have ever seen. It has something for everyone: a secret diary, a secret Naval operation, hollow earth, secret Nazi bases, UFO's and Russian propaganda.

In fact, there is so much on the internet presented by so many that it is almost impossible to determine its origins.  Anyone attempting to research it is confronted with so many "trees" they are forced to just consider the entire forest instead.  Only a handful of researchers have managed to separate fact from fiction.

Byrd in 1929
Byrd in 1934

Byrd in 1955

1. Admiral Richard E. Byrd, Jr:

Was born in 1888 in Winchester, VA. He attended VMI and USNA (1912) where he was the youngest cadet. He played football for Navy until suffering a broken ankle. Byrd was an aviator, Polar explorer and master of logistics. Byrd is best known for his 1926 (disputed) flight to the North Pole for which he (like Lindburgh) was awarded the Medal of Honor. He made two expeditions to Antarctica before 1940, flew over the S.Pole Thanksgiving day in 1929 (promoted to Rear Admiral). In 1934 he spent a winter alone at a remote weather station where he nearly died from carbon monoxide poisoning. In WW2 Byrd surveyed remote Pacific islands for airfields and advised on logistics. He retired in 1947 but made two more antarctic expeditions under Navy command, one in 1947 and 1955 (Highjump and Deepfreeze) He died in his sleep in 1957.

2. The "Secret" Diary:

Byrd had previously published portions of a diary of his 1926 North Pole flight in his 1928 book "Skyward: Man's Mastery of the AIr". Which led some to dispute his flight claiming it fell short due to an engine oil leak. But in 1959, a self-proclaimed scientist Francis Amadeo Giannini published a weird book titled "Worlds Beyond the Poles: The Physical Continuity of the Universe".  In which he claimed Byrd had made a N. Pole flight in 1947.

Giannini was a proponent of the "Flat Earth" theory and the son of famous banker Amadeo P. Giannini who had refused to give him any money.

This was the first reference to a 1947 flight. Giannini's family owned the Bank of Italy which became the Bank of America and it was thought his claims were intended to create controversy. This indeed resulted in a controversy in 1961 between Giannini and several researchers who challenged him. But Giannini never provided proof and his stock answer was "its all in the NY Times". Unfortunately, we may never know if this was simply a mistake he never corrected or if he did it on purpose.

In the 70's a group calling itself "The Society for a complete Earth", led by a Native American Capt. Tawani Wakawa Shoush published and sold a mimeographed "pamphlet" which he claimed was a suppressed diary of Adm. Byrds N. Pole flight in 1947.  Shoush claimed he was a former Marine Capt. and pilot who's goal was to fly a dirigible into an opening in the earth to contact a blue-eyed super race of Arianni. Who spoke a language similar to German and used flying saucers to observe humanity. The cover of the pamphlet featured the logo of the Nazi Thule Society in 1919.

This got the attention of the researcher and hollow earth theorist Dennis Crenshaw creator of the "Hollow Earth Insider Research Report", who challenged his claims.Crenshaw was also an admirer of Byrd and accused Shoush of smearing Byrd by creating the diary to make money.

The diary (a combination of flight log entries and a narrative written after the flight) that claims Byrd encountered UFOs with a type of swastika insignia during his flight which took control of his aircraft and took him through an opening into the earth with a tropical climate near a modern city where he was lectured by the  "Master" of the Arianni who warned Byrd about the use of nuclear weapons.

Crenshaw immediately recognized it could not have been written by Byrd, who had a distinct formal style compared to the "cartoonish" so-called suppressed diary. And that Byrd could not have been two places at once as Byrd was commanding Operation High Jump in the antarctic from August 1946 to late February 1947.

Crenshaw enlisted the aid of a fellow researcher who discovered the "smoking gun" That portions of the diary matched dialogue from a 1937 film  "Lost Horizon" word for word. Crenshaw proved this by comparing the scene/script from the actual movie to the fake diary. CLIP#1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ARdDBhkTKI&feature=emb_logo

Despite the diary being proven to be a plagiary and a fraud, it continues to be used by proponents of hollow earth, UFO's and secret Nazi Antarctic bases. There is also the peculiar testimony of "USAF Col Billie Faye Woodard" (his real father was Zorra from hollow earth) and was "shrunk down" to the size of a todler and sent "topside" by the Arianni because the Government had silenced Adm. Byrd. He was "adopted" by "topsiders" went into the USAF and got promoted from 2nd Lt. to Col to be sent on a "special assignment" He claims to have read the "original" Byrd "secret diary" while working at "Area 51"

3. More Nazi/UFO Connections

The connection with Byrd to Nazis and UFOs appears to have occurred March 5th, 1947 following Operation High Jump when Byrd held a presser for reporters in Chile. Byrds actual statement was misquoted, (some say on purpose) to suggest Byrd had seen UFOs. Here is the actual statement: From US reporter Lee Van Etta.

"Admiral Richard E. Byrd warned today that the United States should adopt measures of protection against the possibility of an invasion of the country by hostile planes coming from the polar regions. The Admiral explained that he was not trying to scare anyone, but the cruel reality is that in case of a new war, the United States could be attacked by planes flying over one or both poles. This statement was made as part of a summary of his own polar experience, in an exclusive interview with International News Services. Talking about the recently completed expedition, Byrd says that the most important result of his observations and discoveries is the potential effect that they have in relation to the security of the United States. The fantastic speed with which the world is shrinking – recalled the Admiral – is one of the most important lessons learned during his recent Antarctic exploration. I have to warn my compatriots that the time has ended when we were able to take refuge in our isolation and rely on the certainty that distances, the oceans, and the poles were a guarantee of safety.’

But the quote was manipulated afterward to be: "Byrd stated that he didn’t want to frighten anyone but that it was a bitter reality that in case of a new war the continental United States would be attacked by flying objects which could fly from pole to pole at incredible speeds”.

Adding to the disinformation was the fact that two Nazi U-boats had surrendered in Argentina two and three months after the war ended in 1945. The U-boats U-530 (type 9C/40 and U-977 (type 7C) fueled speculation of secret Nazi Antarctic bases and that Hitler had survived.

After surrendering to the Argentine authorities, the German U-boat commanders were extradited to the US where they responded to the charge of having torpedoed the Brazilian cruiser Bahia, and then to the UK, where they faced accusations that they had landed Nazi leaders in Argentina before surrendering. Both boats were seized by the US Navy, and sunk during naval gunnery exercises.

Military Historian Mark Fenton mentions Argentina in this video:

Ernst Zundel:

I was surprised to find that the man famous for his questioning details of the Holocaust may have also contributed to the conspiracy:

How many people more recently may be using Zundel as a source or inspiration but not admitting it because of Zundel being accused of being a "Holocaust denier"

Under the pseudonyms Christof Friedrich and Mattern Friedrich, Zündel wrote several publications promoting the idea that UFOs were craft developed by German scientists who had fled to New Swabia, Antarctica. These titles include "Secret Nazi Polar Expeditions" (1978) and "Hitler at the South Pole" (1979). He promoted the idea of Nazi secret bases in Antarctica, Nazi UFOs, secret polar bases and Hollow Earth theories.

Along with Willibald Mattern, a German émigré living in SantiagoChile, Zündel also wrote UFOs: Nazi Secret Weapon? on Nazi UFOs in German and translated into English.
It is not clear whether Zündel really believed these theories or whether they were merely speculative fiction.  "I realized that North Americans were not interested in being educated. They want to be entertained. The book was just for fun. With a picture of the Führer on the cover and flying saucers coming out of Antarctica it was a chance to get on radio and TV talk shows".- Zundel
END OF SEGMENT
In the next segments, we will look at Operation High Jump - What it was and wasn't and how the story continues to expand and who is benefiting from it.
