Part 2: "The Battle of Antarctica" Feb 26, 1947

Fact or Fiction?

The secret diary of Adm. Richard E. Byrd, Jr. and Operation Highjump

Patriot Outlaws Radio - February 15, 2020

Part 2: "The Battle of Antarctica" Feb 26, 1947

Introduction: (Mack leads into the segment)
In our last segment, we proved that Byrd's "Secret Diary" was a hoax and is now considered as such by both Nazi/UFO and Hollow Earth conspiracists. We also described how later works of fiction by Ladislas Szabo (LA-Dis-Las ZA-BOW) and Ernst Zundel (using two pen-names) may have influenced later claims of secret Nazi bases and an attack by the Nazis using UFOs on US Navy vessels during Operation High Jump...

Gunner: Tonight we will consider claims of secret Nazi bases and the sources of inspiration for the hijacking of history using the so-called Feb 26, 1947, Nazi/UFO attack on USN vessels during Operation High Jump.

And I am going to use official documents, ship histories and logs, and a peer-reviewed research study to give this serious debunking.  But before I do:

In the last segment, Mack, you mentioned something about a statement in an interview with ADM Byrd that flat earthers use to support their theory and I think I found it. The 1954 Longines Chronoscope Interview:

CLIP#1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrdSal9uH28&t=495s (1:25 -2:09) 50 seconds.
ROLL CLIP#1

This is another case of people misquoting Byrd. What Byrd actually said was "Little America" (referring to the base which was the primary objective of Operation High Jump, NOT "Middle America". What the flat earthers do is take this misquoted sentence and somehow use it to calculate latitude from the center of the US to Antarctica and then claim that these areas called "DOMEs" are the EDGE of the FLAT WORLD!  "LOOK - SEE, ADM Byrd found the edge of the earth and couldn't go any further!"

In reality, Byrd was talking about an area north of "Little America IV" and beyond the South Pole roughly in the center of Antarctica which had not been explored. So I thought I would clear that up for everyone before we move on.

Now, let the long-deserved debunking begin

1. "Secret Nazi bases"
The story begins in the summer of 1936 when Hitler created a four-year plan to boost the German military and the domestic economy to be ready for war by 1940.  He put Hermann Göring in charge, and they developed a “German Fat Plan” Hitler put his fattest Nazi in charge of the German "Fat Plan" (You can't make this shit up!) to enable Germany to improve the efficiency of its domestic consumption of (butter, milk, cream, lard, cheese, bacon, margarine, salad oils, detergents, candles, linoleum, and paints. The idea was to find substitutes for these oil- and fat-based products in case imported sources were cut off. At the time, whale oil was one of the main ingredients for margarine, and Germans ate a lot of margarine.
Hitler put his fattest Nazi in charge of the German "Fat Plan"

To prepare for war, they needed whale oil and they had to buy whale oil from Norway and they didn’t want to spend the currency on Norway. They wanted to produce whale oil by themselves. By the late 1930s, Germany was importing over 220,000 tons of whale oil per year from Norway.

Germany began with the manufacture of 50 whaling ships and seven factory mother ships to begin domestic production.  It quickly became apparent that to service the industry, a whaling station would need to be constructed along the coast of Antarctica, where the most plentiful whales were found. Sufficient land would have to be claimed to ensure German rights to territorial waters and resource rights.

In December 1938, Germany launched its Third Antarctic Expedition, commanded by Alfred Ritscher, a noted German Arctic expert.  The Germans sent a single aging vessel, the "MS Schwabenland" which they had refitted for over a year to be an ice-breakerThe expedition arrived off the Northern coast of Antarctica at Queen Maud Land on January 19, 1939.

They intended to occupy the territory claimed by Norway and needed to conduct aerial mapping surveys of the area for the proposed whaling station. But the station was never built due to the onset of WW2.

Nazi "Antarctic Flag" of "New Shwabenland"
So after Roswell and into the early 1950s rumors began to circulate among German nationalist circles that postwar flying saucers were actuallyGerman super-weapons that had been under development and tested during the Third Reich. At the time of Germany's surrender in May 1945, this technology was supposedly shipped to safety in the Arctic, South America, and Antarctica. These rumors began circulating once again in the late 1970s in a series of fiction books written by Ernst Zundel. The abundance of UFO sightings after Roswell in June 1947 was then attributed to a hidden Nazi presence in remote and inaccessible regions of the world.

But following a meticulous look through Nazi records,  Colin Summerhayes of the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge and Peter Beeching (2006) published a peer-reviewed study which found "no mention in any of the German documents of any intention to establish a base during the expedition of 1938–1939, nor that any attempt was made to do so at that time or afterward." The expedition was only off the Antarctic coast for a month, most of which was dedicated to mapping out the small area in the first place. (2)

"As there is no evidence that the ship carried either motorized equipment or dogs."  "The building of a base in the mountains would mean that the crew had to do as previous explorers Scott and Shackleton did, and once they knew from the aerial photos where the mountains were, walk towards them across unmapped, dangerous, crevasse-ridden terrain tugging their stores and equipment behind them." From a strictly practical sense, a Nazi base doesn't jive with the supplies they had at hand.

There was also a quote from German Admiral Karl Donitz during the Nuremberg trials. (Likely created by Zundel.) Dönitz supposedly bragged about an "invulnerable fortress, a paradise-like oasis in the middle of eternal ice." As for Dönitz's claim, there has not been a single shred of proof to back it up, and it remains questionable if he even said it. For all we know, he might have been actually talking about the Arctic ice itself. (1)

The Germans did discover a warm region known as the "Shermacher Oasis" which is now the location of two research stations as of 2018. And also evidence of tectonic plate activity in the Atlantic Ocean.  And they did not return until the early 1980s.
Area in red showing Nazi claimed "New Swabia"

Proponents of the "New Swabenland" theory claim that the Nazis used U-boats to transport supplies, personnel, and even flying discs and captured UFOs to the "secret base". Author Steve Quayle claims that the German Type 21 submarines built between 1943 - 45 were used for this purpose and that "they were designed as underwater freighters the size of an aircraft carrier." In reality, 118 Type 21 subs were designed and built for coastal patrols.

Only two, the U-2511 and U-3008  saw active service and neither were used in combat. They were much larger (at 250' x 26') than many previous types (140' x 13') but they were not the size of an aircraft carrier at the time at almost 900' x 100'.  I guess Quayle didn't bother to look that shit up!

The claims of a Nazi secret Antarctic base are best summed up by Military Historian Mark Felton in CLIP#2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs0ZaCQrScc&t=439s (Starting at 7:24 - 9:44) 2 min 20 sec.  ROLL CLIP#2

2. "The Battle of the Antarctic"

Before we go further I need to point out that the official Navy designation for the expedition was Task Force 68 and was Commanded by Rear Admiral Richard H. Cruzen. Byrd had retired shortly before the operation but the Navy appointed him "Officer in Charge" of the "Carrier Group" (Task Group 68.4) the USS Philippine Sea (CVG- 20)  Operation Highjump, was officially titled The United States Navy Antarctic Developments Program, 1946–1947.

The security classification was: CONFIDENTIAL (The lowest level) simply because it contained sensitive details related to operational methods and procedures.
How do I know this? Because I have a PDF copy of the Official Report (540 pages) "Unclassified" on 13 Jan 1955.

Classfied CONFIDENTIAL July 1947
UNCLASSIFIED 13 Jan 1955

https://documents.theblackvault.com/documents/technology/highjump/AntarcticFOIA.pdf

The aircraft on the Philippine Sea were six Douglas R4D-5 Skytrain transports, two Stinson OY-1 Sentinel liaison aircraft, and a Sikorsky HO3S-1helicopter along with cargo, spare parts, skis.  Listing of 13 vessels:
Communications and Flagship USS Mount Olympus (Cruzen)
Aircraft carrier and flagship USS Philippine Sea (Byrd)
Seaplane Tender USS Pine Island.
Seaplane Tender USS Currituck
Destroyer USS Brownson
Destroyer USS Henderson
Tanker USS Canisteo
Tanker USS Cacapon
Supplyship USS Yancey
Supplyship USS Merrick
Icebreaker USS Burton Island
Icebreaker USCGC Northwinds
Submarine USS Sennet

NOTE: I deployed as a US Marine with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit attached to a carrier battle group and I can tell you this (Byrds's) compliment of 13 ships as it was configured, hardly represents an assault force.

I will go into detail more in the next segment but for now, I will say that it was essentially a US Navy (military) Antarctic Expedition planned by ADM Byrd and approved by Chief of Naval Operations ADM Chester Nimitz.

Origin:

The first mention of an "invasion" by US forces after WW2 to destroy Nazi bases using Operation Highjump as a cover, was by Ernst Zundel (Christoff Friedrich/Mattern Friedrich) in his 1974 book "UFOs Nazi Secret Weapon".  The book was republished in 1978 in Canada by Samisdat Publishers LTD owned and operated by Ernst Zundel. (See: photographs and Zundel pages 92-98)

On April 11, 1982, popular American radio host Mae Brussel, host of "Dialogue: Conspiracy" read a portion of Zundle's book starting on page 92 about Highjump during part one of a series of broadcasts titled: "Nazi UFO Bases in Antarctica and the Falklands War Connection." (The Falklands war had begun just a week earlier on April 2.)

Although Brussel recognized the book as being connected to pro-Nazi publications, she failed to disclose that Zundel was the author/publisher.

It is my belief that Brussel, the daughter of prominent Rabbi Edgar Magnin (considered one of the most prominent Jewish leaders in the United States) and a talented researcher, may have been reading from the 1978 copy and would have known that Zundel was the author but did not name him because of his reputation as a German nationalist and Neo-Nazi known for promoting Holocaust denial.

And as I will prove later in this segment, other conspiracy theorists do not mention Zundel either, because if they did, it would reveal that the source of their claims was a Neo-Nazi fiction writer and Holocaust denier.

More recently an article by Eric J. Charon, in 2003 titled "How high can you jump? Operation Highjump and the UFO connection" claimed that40 ships were involved and included 1,400 armed sailors. Charon was the first to claim Highjump was met with heavy resistance from UFOs and had to retreat.

In 2006 a "documentary" by Russia TV called "The Third Reich-Operation UFO.", allegedly based on Soviet KGB/NKVD reports released after the Soviet Union collapsed, claimed Highjump was highly classified and ended in failure with the loss of at least one vessel, several fighter aircraft, and dozens of sailors.

At some point, the film was translated for English subtitles but so far I have not found an English dubbed version.  There are many versions of this, I chose this one because the audio and video are more clear:

Analysis of Film Clip: (Mack and Gunner): Sorry for putting everyone through so much Russian language.  Mack, what do you think about that? Did you notice the "theatrics" in the narrator's voice?

The film has a lot of problems:
The ships mentioned in the film are the USS Murdoch, USS Casablanca, and USS Brownson and two F4U Corsair fighter aircraft. The combat footage appears to from WW2 Pacific and Kamikaze attacks.

There is a major problem with Sayerson’s statement. There has been no torpedo boat named Maddox in the US Navy. The USS Maddox (a Destroyer) was involved in the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. In the Russian documentary, the incident described by Sayerson (misspelled Sireson) who claims he was aboard the Casablanca, refers to the destroyer “Murdoch” as being sunk.  There was, however, no destroyer named “Murdoch” active in the US Fleet in 1947.

The Aircraft Carrier USS Casablanca (CVE-55) was decommissioned on 10 June 1946 and sold for scrap on 23 April 1947! And could not have been near Antarctica in Feb 1947.

The destroyer USS Brownson participated in Highjump but was not near any other ships but the Pine Island, Canisteo, and the Philippine Sea.   According to the ships history http://www.south-pole.com/brownson.htm
14 FEB 1947"Left southwest coast of Adelaide Island with USS Pine Island and USS Canisteo en route to the Weddell Sea."
So the Brownson would have been well clear of Southern Antarctica on 14 Feb and into the South Atlantic Ocean by Feb 26.  In addition, flagship Command/Communications vessel USS Mount Olympus log reports that it was "Underway toward Australia and New Zealand with Icebreaker USS Burton Island."

According to the ships log the carrier USS Philippine Sea (which left Antarctica first after completing its mission to deliver the 6 R4D aircraft), was transiting the Panama Canal Zone on 14 Feb 1947 and arrived at port Quonset, Rhode Island on 27 Feb 1947 - One day after it is said to have been attacked by UFOs off Antarctica! http://www.south-pole.com/philippine.htm

The never before known testimony by two US Navy servicemen with Operation Highjump was featured again in an October 2012 article in New Dawn magazine by Frank Joseph called "Our Real War of the Worlds".

Joseph begins by literally describing the armament of each ship and claiming the USS Philippine Sea was carrying 100 fighter aircraft. And that the Martin PBM flying boats were each capable of carrying 4,000 lbs of bombs!

He also stated incorrectly that the Seaplane Tenders Currituck and Pine Island were Barnegat class when they were both the newer Currituck class. (Guess he didn't bother to look that shit up.)

He even mocked the expedition saying: "In any case, its official, modest, entirely peaceful agenda was overwhelmingly dwarfed and contradicted by the prodigious fire-power and armed might assembled by Task Force 68. In fact, few research scientists and very little investigative equipment were included. Moreover, most of its stated objectives were never attempted, much less achieved."  (I will prove this to be totally false.)

Joseph also gives a detailed analysis of the two "eyewitness accounts", (only Sayerson was mentioned in the 2006 Russian documentary). John P. Szehwach, a radioman stationed on the USS Brownson, recalled how UFOs appeared dramatically out of the ocean depths. On January 17, 1947, at 0700 hours, Szehwach said:
"I and my shipmates in the pilothouse port side observed for several minutes the bright lights that ascended about 45 degrees into the sky very quickly… We couldn’t i.d. the lights because our radar was limited to 250 miles in a straight line. " Strange that he would use the older 19th-century term "pilothouse" instead of "bridge" more commonly used during and after WW2.
Over the next several weeks, according to the "Soviet report", the UFOs flew close over the US naval flotilla which fired on the UFOs which then retaliated with deadly effects.

My research shows that as of Dec 24, 1947, the Brownson was serving as a weather station 200 miles from the Seaplane Tender USS Pine Island when Five survivors of a PBM Mariner crash on Thurston Island on Dec 30 were transferred from Brownson to USS Philippine Sea along with mail.   http://www.south-pole.com/brownson.htm

"On January 18, the USS PINE ISLAND rendezvoused with the USS BROWNSON and transferred the crash survivors, who were then taken to the USS PHILIPPINE SEA for transfer back to the United States."

This means that the Brownson was likely underway heading to meet the Pine Island on Jan 17. Neither ship reported unusual activity or of having fired upon or been attacked by UFOs while supporting the rescue operation.

Buried in the footnotes, Joseph lists one attribution to author and conspiracy theorist Joseph P. Farrell, known for writing a number of books about Nazis and UFOs! And near the end of the article, Frank Joseph mentions a similar story by the EU Times, a known source of disinformation produced by David Booth aka "Sorcha Faal"
https://www.eutimes.net/2010/12/wikileaks-set-to-reveal-us-ufo-war-in-southern-ocean/

"In a 12 January 2011 up-date of a previous 13 December article entitled, “WikiLeaks Set To Reveal U.S.-UFO War In Southern Ocean”. The EU Times stated, “A new report circulating in the Kremlin today prepared by Russian Space Forces 45th Division of Space Control, says that an upcoming WikiLeaks release of secret U.S. cables details that the Americans have been ‘engaged’ since 2004 in a ‘war’ against UFOs based on or near the continent of Antarctica" According to this Russian report, the United States went to its highest alert level on June 10, 2004 after a massive fleet of UFO’s “suddenly emerged” from the Southern Ocean and approached Guadalajara, Mexico barely 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) from the American border. Prior to reaching the US border, however, this massive UFO fleet is said in this report to have “dimensionally returned” to their Southern Ocean “home base”.

"Interestingly, the EU Times’ quoted report describing UFOs that “‘suddenly emerged’ from the Southern Ocean” is identical to Operation Highjump accounts." Joseph wrote.  How convenient is that?

Other conspiracy theorists have claimed TF-68 comprised a force totaling nearly 50 ships with thousands of troops from the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and the Soviet Union participating in the "invasion." Not surprisingly, the most outlandish fictional version of Highjump is that of Douglas Duane Dietrich. In a 2012 interview, Dietrich embellished the fictional stories to include the use of dozens of WW2 era US Naval aircraft, "some Vought XF5U-1 flying disks from America's 'black program', 26 bombers stationed in South America, and a force of 3,500 US Marines flown in from New Zealand in DC-3s who were "obliterated" by the Nazis using "flugelrad" flying discs. Dietrich also described the Seaplane tender USS Pine Island as being a "catapult ship," and stumbled over the same names of other ships Zundel had misspelled. Undeniable proof that Dietrich had copied directly from page 92 of Zundel's book!

Dietrich also claims that James Forrestal, who was then SECNAV (1944) and would become the first Secretary of the newly created Department of Defense in September 1947, "went along for the ride." In his book "Empire Beneath the Ice," (2015) Steve Quayle claims Operation Highjump was a complete failure and proof that "the Nazis won WW2."

In other words, we are being told by known sources of disinformation that our Navy has been at war with UFOs in the Antarctic since 2004 in addition to the false claims and fictional accounts of ships during Operation Highjump being attacked by UFOs for over a month in 1947 and it has all been covered up. Why have there been only two "eyewitnesses" in over 70 years come forward? The conspiracy continues with some falsely claiming that RADM Byrd and former SECNAV/ SECDEF James Forrestal went insane, were hospitalized and were ultimately murdered in order to silence them to keep the outcome of Operation Highjump a secret.

The Official Report of Operation Highjump was published and distributed to Government offices in June 1947. The distribution list on page 30 of the report showed that a copy was delivered to Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal. There is absolutely no evidence to substantiate that the death of Forrestal in May 1949 had any connection to Operation Highjump.

Conclusion:  I want to conclude by hammering in two final nails here. Why would a Naval "Operation" against a "secret Nazi base" in Northern Antarctica located at Queen Maud land be conducted from the Southern Ross Shelf at "Little America IV" 3,000 km South on the opposite end of the continent?  And: My research proves unequivocally that
Only THREE  of the 13 Operation Highjump (TF-68) vessels were in the Antarctic on Feb 26, 1947: Tanker USS Canisteo,  Seaplane tender USS Pine Island, and Seaplane tender USS Currituck

The majority of Task Force 68 wasn't even there!

I will read to you from official sources where each of these ships actually was on Feb 26, 1947, from sources below:

(Gunner reads locations on Feb 26, 1947)

Consider the "Battle of Antarctica"  Debunked
Next week I will present what Operation High Jump really was and what actually happened.
